Ruim een decennium na Owen James’ [Grammer of Ornament](https://www.kekness.nl/grammar-of-ornament/) maakte ook Albert-Charles-Auguste Racine tussen 1869 en 1873 tien overzichtswerken van de geschiedenis van design. Van het oude Egypte naar het verre Oosten en van de Romeinse tijd naar de Middeleeuwen; alles zat erin.
